What the Ship Took Out of the Week

A voyage is comfortable, catered and organised, and the one thing it does not supply is privacy, which is why the evening ashore gets booked properly.

Ask a couple on the night they come ashore what they most want and the answer is rarely what an itinerary would predict. Not food, which there was too much of. Not sights, after nine ports. Usually something close to: a door, a room, and nobody expecting us anywhere.

The thing a ship cannot give you

A cabin is a well made box. It locks, it is cleaned twice a day, and it is entirely private in the ordinary sense. What it is not is separate. There is a corridor outside it with people in it at all hours. There are announcements. There is a neighbour on each side through a wall built to a shipyard's budget.

Add a schedule nobody in the room chose. Dinner at a sitting. Excursions timed to the minute. A muster. Days shaped by somebody else's competence, which is pleasant for a week and starts to press by the second.

What that does to the evening ashore

It makes it the quietest evening of the trip and the one couples ask for, and it explains why couples who book both ends of a cruise book differently at each end. Before a sailing they want ninety minutes and a night's sleep. After one they want length, stillness and a room with nothing printed on the morning.

Three hours for a couple with one therapist is EUR 1,080 and is the usual answer. The eight hour block at EUR 2,500 is the other one, and it belongs to this night rather than to any other on the trip, because it is a night rather than a session: sleep inside it, a shower, a long stretch with the lamp off.

The sleep debt

Very few people sleep properly at sea. Some of that is the movement and most of it is the schedule, and by the last morning the two of you are carrying a fortnight of it. One good night does not clear the debt but it starts, and a session that ends in sleep rather than in a second wind is the one to book.

In practice that means starting earlier than you would at home. Three hours from eight finishes at eleven and leaves a whole night. The same three hours from eleven finishes at two, and a body still running on ship time will wake at seven regardless.

Sea legs, briefly

Standing still feels like moving for a day or two. It is ordinary and it passes on its own. It is worth mentioning in the thread only because it changes what the two of you will want out of an evening, which changes the advice that comes back.

Where to be

Most couples stay near the water because that is where the morning left them and the luggage is heavy. It costs nothing in arrival time, since the figure is forty to sixty minutes to a central door in any district and nothing is added for being close to the terminal.

There is an argument for moving further in, though, and it is not about distance. Rooms by the water are often small, and after a cabin the appetite is usually for the opposite of a small room. A quieter district and more floor space makes a better last night than a view of the thing you have just left.

Arrange it before you sail

Shipboard internet is slow, expensive and sometimes absent, and the morning you dock is a poor moment to open a first conversation. Write from home, at the same time as the pre-cruise evening, months ahead if you like.

Say in the message that you come ashore that morning. It is the one sentence worth putting in a thread on this site, because everything else in the reply follows from it: the length recommended, the start hour, and whether the two of you are steered towards one therapist or a therapist each.

The morning after

That is the first morning in two weeks the pair of you own outright. No group with a coloured label, no excursion, no sitting. A long breakfast and a flight in the afternoon, which is the correct way for a cruise to end and the reason this evening is worth planning as carefully as the sailing was.
